Advice & Q&A

“Why are your dog boxes black? Doesn’t black attract more heat?”

Does a black dog box get hotter than a white dog box?

It’s a question we’re occasionally asked, and understandably so, as we all want our dogs to travel in a safe and comfortable environment.

We manufacture our dog boxes from high-quality, 6 mm black polypropylene, which provides a smart, professional finish that complements the interiors of modern vehicles.

But does the colour make a difference to temperature?

When a dog box is shaded from direct sunlight, its temperature is mainly influenced by the temperature inside the vehicle and the surrounding airflow. Under these conditions, there is very little difference between black and white polypropylene.

It is true that black surfaces generally absorb more heat from direct sunlight than white surfaces. However, our dog boxes are designed specifically to fit within the rear of the vehicle, where much of the solid polypropylene is shielded from direct sunlight.

Our boxes also feature large stainless steel mesh doors, together with additional mesh ventilation in the sides and rear, designed to encourage airflow throughout the enclosure.

In windowless vans, the boxes are normally completely shielded from direct sunlight. In estate cars and SUVs, some sunlight may enter through the windows, but the amount reaching the solid panels depends on the vehicle and the position of the sun.

What matters most is the temperature and ventilation within the vehicle itself. A white dog box will not prevent heat building up in a hot vehicle, just as a black dog box does not automatically become hotter simply because of its colour.

Our focus is on producing strong, well-ventilated, vehicle-specific dog boxes that combine practicality, safety-conscious design and a high-quality appearance.

Whatever the colour of a dog box, owners should always ensure their dogs have adequate ventilation, are protected from excessive heat and direct sunlight, and are never left unattended in a warm vehicle.
